Summary

A collaborative structural health monitoring (SHM) project at the Juma Mosque in Itchan Kala, Khiva, Uzbekistan, reveals critical insights into the minaret's geometric anomalies and stability. Using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), researchers captured high-resolution 3D point clouds, demonstrating that the minaret approximates a truncated cone with measurable residual inclination and taper. This approach combines TLS with planned in-situ measurements—such as accelerometers for resonant frequency analysis, position transducers, and thermocouples for thermal expansion and crack monitoring—to create a comprehensive SHM framework. A preliminary finite-element (FE) model, calibrated to the scanned geometry, will guide future restoration efforts by evaluating intervention efficacy. This study underscores TLS's potential in preserving UNESCO World Heritage Sites by integrating advanced monitoring with numerical modeling.
