Summary
Ancient Greek water management, dating back to the Minoan Era (ca. 3200–1100 BC), demonstrated advanced hydrogeological engineering, including the development of aqueduct-like qanats—gravity-fed underground galleries that transported groundwater from mountainous regions to lowlands without reliance on large-scale lifting techniques. This study reveals that such systems were not only prevalent in democratic periods, favoring sustainable and cost-effective practices, but also in oligarchic eras, where grand hydraulic projects dominated public sectors. Historical evidence shows that tunneling technology, exemplified by the 530 BC Samos tunnel, was employed to convey water across elevations, with functional examples persisting today in Athens, Crete, Rhodes, and Serres. The research highlights parallels between ancient and modern water challenges, emphasizing the durability and sustainability of this Persian-originated technology, despite its high construction and maintenance costs.
