Summary
Community-based tourism in Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Brazil, faces significant potential and limitations. While offering opportunities for sustainable development, income diversification, and the preservation of traditional practices, it also grapples with challenges such as rapid tourist influx, unsustainable hotel construction, and threats to indigenous communities. A qualitative study of two communities in Barreirinhas revealed that despite being marketed as community-based experiences, they often fall short of adhering to sustainable tourism principles due to a lack of collaboration and effective management. The research highlights the need for stronger community involvement and more sustainable practices to maximize the park's potential while mitigating its limitations.
