Summary
Medieval and post-medieval funerary practices in Eastern Liguria, including sites like Portovenere, Cinque Terre, and the islands of Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto, underwent significant transformations during the transition from medieval to later periods. This study cataloged and analyzed burial data across multiple locations—Luni, Migliarina, Sarzana, Vezzano Ligure, Brugnato, Soviore, and San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte—to identify shifts in social and cultural norms. By distinguishing phases of necropolis use, the research revealed how funerary traditions evolved, reflecting broader societal changes in the region. The findings provide a rare, interdisciplinary framework for understanding lesser-studied medieval burial customs.
