Summary
A study of the Ili Basin in the northern Tien Shan reveals that left-lateral strike-slip faults at its northwestern margin accommodate approximately 3 mm/year of northeast-southwest shear, while right-lateral oblique faults transfer motion and contribute to shortening. The research combines GPS data, earthquake slip vectors, remote sensing, and field observations to propose a kinematic model describing active deformation in the region. This model integrates geodetic data, seismology, historical faulting records, and prehistorical surface faulting, offering new insights into the tectonic dynamics of the northern Tien Shan.
