Summary

A century after the initial excavations of Xiongnu noble tombs, this study reveals significant advancements in understanding the evolution and chronology of elite burial structures. Analyzing 28 excavated tombs across Mongolia, Baikal, and Tuva, researchers have uncovered patterns in tomb structures, artifacts, and radiocarbon dating, providing a timeline for the development of large square-shaped tombs associated with Xiongnu nobility. The findings highlight the sophistication of Xiongnu burial practices, including ongoing research at sites like Noin-Ula and Gol mod-II, which contribute to a broader narrative of cultural and architectural evolution among this ancient elite.
