Summary

Kostroma icon painters, led by Lyubim Ageyev, played a pivotal role in the development of 17th-century Russian mural painting. Their work on the Assumption Cathedral of Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery (1641) established distinctive stylistic features—such as nuanced red and blue hues, antique facial depictions, and ornamental motifs—that became hallmarks of the 'Kostroma school.' These characteristics persisted in subsequent works, including the 1642 icon Nativity of the Mother of God (Ferapontov Monastery) and deesis icons from Holy Trinity Ipatievsky Monastery. The study employed comparative-historical, historical-genetic, systematic, and historical-statistical methods to trace the evolution of these artels, identifying seven temples painted by Kostroma masters, six of which retain frescoes. This research underscores the school's influence on Russian iconography while providing a chronological framework for its creative output.
