Summary

A significant legal and cultural turning point emerged from the theft of pieces from Victor Horta's Maison du Peuple (Brussels, 1896–99) in 1983. The case revealed dubious ownership practices and highlighted how crises—such as the building's demolition and the subsequent theft—reshaped its reputation and secured its future stability. While the theft was a disaster for the stolen artifacts, it galvanized local outrage and cultural interest, ensuring the preservation of remaining elements. This study unravels the complex provenance of Maison du Peuple, demonstrating how legal scrutiny during moments of crisis reconfigured public perception and safeguarded this Art Nouveau icon.
