Summary
A comparative analysis of three soil physical quality assessment methods—Florentino (1998), Andrews et al. (2002), and Peralta (2012)—revealed that the methodology proposed by Andrews et al. is most suitable for application in the Vertisol soils of Coro, Venezuela, due to its lack of dependency on local reference values. Key indicators such as aggregate stability (AD), effective pore volume (EPT), infiltration capacity at 20 cm depth (IC20), soil penetration resistance (ISP), and hydraulic conductivity (ks) were identified as the most robust for describing physical quality processes. The study also highlighted that extrapolating reference thresholds can lead to inaccurate estimations, potentially misrepresenting soil sustainability. Notably, moderate land-use intensity was found to offer the highest levels of physical sustainability across all methods, despite their differing approaches.
