Summary

A study on the Tigris River west of Samarra, Iraq, revealed significant gender imbalances among fish populations, with female dominance ranging from 1.19:1 to 7.0:1 across eight species. Monthly variations in gonad function (G.S.I) were also observed, indicating reproductive activity fluctuations. Environmental factors such as water temperature (10–22°C), dissolved oxygen (6.5–8.4 mg/L), and turbidity (39.5–49 NTU) were measured over six months, with notable peaks in temperature and turbidity during colder months. The research highlights the ecological dynamics of this UNESCO World Heritage Site's aquatic ecosystem, providing insights into species-specific reproductive strategies and environmental influences.
