Summary

A new interpretation of Plutarque's account suggests that Byblos, renowned as a hub for the trade of precious wood, served as the origin for the timber used to craft Osiris' coffin. This symbolic connection is supported by ancient Egyptian texts from the tomb of Mentuhotep IV, which reference wood as predestined material for coffins. The study proposes that Plutarque's narrative about Isis discovering and freeing Osiris' coffin hidden within a tree trunk in Byblos may be a metaphorical allusion to this historical trade significance rather than a literal event.
