Summary

Harar Jugol, Ethiopia's fortified historic town, stands out as a unique urban environment with a woman-headed society and strong social ties among residents. Unlike other historical Ethiopian cities, Harar maintains its traditional Muslim character while supporting comparatively wealthy inhabitants through a dense network of Harari people dispersed across the country. A study analyzing architectural heritage and housing conditions in central Harar revealed that some buildings date back to the 17th century, preserving their original character despite modern urban pressures. The research employed a case study approach, examining both building typology and resident demographics to highlight Harar's distinct living environment and cultural resilience.
