Summary
A comprehensive survey across five forest reserves in Burkina Faso, including Comoé-Léraba Partial Reserve near Comoé National Park, found no evidence of chimpanzee presence through direct observations or signs such as nests, tracks, or feeding remnants. Only three historical reports of chimpanzees were recorded, suggesting their seasonal movement from neighboring Côte d'Ivoire may have ceased due to poaching and political instability in the region. The study highlights the likely extirpation of chimpanzees in south-central Burkina Faso, with poaching rates of 0.29 km⁻¹ and unmanaged lands contributing to population decline.
