Summary

A new species of Sangiorgioichthys, named S. valmarensis, has been identified from the Late Ladinian Kalkschieferzone of Monte San Giorgio, Switzerland. This discovery expands the known diversity of Semionotidae in the Middle Triassic, suggesting that their explosive radiation during the Norian was preceded by an earlier diversification phase. The new species differs from existing ones in suborbital arrangement, tooth shape, and scale morphology. The study contributes to understanding the evolutionary history of this fish group, with implications for broader patterns of Triassic marine biodiversity.
