Summary

A long-term strategy to mitigate natural hazards and enhance public awareness has significantly advanced the conservation of Petra. The study highlights the effectiveness of targeted interventions, such as geomorphological monitoring and landslide risk mitigation measures, in stabilizing the Siq—a narrow, 1.2 km gorge that serves as the primary tourist entrance to Petra. These efforts have not only reduced the vulnerability of the site but also strengthened the capacity of national authorities through capacity development initiatives. The project underscores a successful model for managing natural hazards at heritage sites, offering valuable insights for broader applications in cultural conservation.
