Summary
Göbekli Tepe, a Pre-Pottery Neolithic site in Turkey, challenges conventional interpretations of its structures as solely ritual or religious buildings. Research suggests that while these structures may have had symbolic significance, they could also have served domestic functions, potentially as houses with rich cultural meanings. This study critiques the reliance on modern distinctions between sacred and profane spaces to identify prehistoric ritual sites, proposing an alternative hypothesis that emphasizes the multifunctional nature of Neolithic architecture. The analysis examines archaeological evidence and methodological challenges in distinguishing ritual from domestic spaces, offering a nuanced perspective on the social organization and symbolic practices of early Near Eastern societies.
