Summary

Researchers have identified a new species of fern, Haplopteris yakushimensis, from Yakushima Island, Japan. This discovery was made by comparing macro- and micromorphological characteristics with closely related species, such as Haplopteris amboinensis and H. forrestiana (a synonym of H. doniana). The new species is distinguished by its chartaceous matured fronds, shallowly grooved adaxial costae, and obtuse carinate abaxial costae. Additionally, a phylogenetic analysis based on plastid regions chlL, ndhF, and matK was conducted to further elucidate the relationships among 14 East-Asian Haplopteris species, including the newly described taxon.
