Summary
This research reveals how ancient cultural memory, embodied in myths like the legend of Dayu, is transformed into localized and humanized legends that integrate seamlessly into daily life. Through fieldwork in Songshan, China, the study demonstrates that people adapt these legends to contemporary needs, bridging the gap between absolute past (cultural memory) and present (communicative memory). The findings highlight the dynamic process of myth localization, where national myths evolve into regional stories deeply embedded in local society, illustrating how cultural narratives remain relevant across generations.
