Summary
A significant gap exists between street food hygiene practices and consumer expectations in George Town, Penang—a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its gastronomic appeal. Research involving 200 consumers (100 locals and 100 international tourists) and 30 hawkers, alongside seven in-depth interviews, revealed that hygiene issues persist despite variations in perceptions between local and international groups. The study underscores the need for urgent intervention by authorities and vendors to address these concerns through targeted initiatives, ensuring food safety without compromising George Town's cultural and culinary heritage.
