Summary
This study reveals how vigilantes of historic buildings in São Luís, Brazil, experience and narrate encounters with intangible beings, such as ghosts and spirits. Through ethnographic research conducted between 2017 and 2019, the author explored three public structures in the city's historic center, documenting sensory manifestations—visual, auditory, olfactory—and the emotional impact these experiences have on workers. The findings highlight a dual relationship of familiarity and estrangement that vigilantes develop with their surroundings, while also contributing to a broader narrative tradition about supernatural phenomena in the UNESCO-listed site.
