Summary
A newly discovered Portuguese translation of the 'Definições' of the Order of Calatrava, dating from 1439-1440 and preserved at the Monastery of Alcobaça, offers a more complete and preferable version than previously published. This late 13th-century document, promulgated by the general chapter of Cister, provides critical insights into the internal life and governance of the Order, including novice reception rituals, master elections, asset division, and abbot visitations. The findings shed light on the order's operational dynamics during a period of tension and discord while raising questions about Alcobaça Monastery's interest in Calatrava statutes.
