Summary

A first-of-its-kind inter-Korean study reveals that microbial colonization varies significantly across the mural paintings of Goguryeo tombs, with some surfaces showing critical degradation risks. The 2006 survey, involving joint teams from North and South Korea, identified key environmental factors—such as humidity and pigment composition—that accelerate biological deterioration. Unlike previous conservation efforts, this research combined scientific monitoring with long-term data collection to assess eight World Heritage-listed tombs. Findings underscore the need for targeted preservation strategies, particularly in regions where microbial activity correlates with pigment instability. The study also highlights the challenges of sustained cross-border collaboration, as no follow-up investigations have been conducted since 2007.
