Summary

A rare discovery of the African softshell turtle (Trionyx triunguis) in Senegal has doubled the known records for this species in the country, highlighting its potential presence only within a 10 km stretch along the south-west border of Niokolo-Koba National Park. The study, conducted through interviews with fishers and trapping efforts over two years, revealed that the turtle is now extremely rare, with sightings occurring approximately every five years. Three individuals were documented: one live adult and two juveniles, all found within a 150 km stretch along the Gambia River near Gouloumbou and Tako Mayo. Fishers reported significant declines in the species over the past 2-3 decades, suggesting historical presence that has since diminished due to opportunistic captures on fishing longlines. The research also involved training local fishers in measuring and marking turtles, fostering a partnership for future conservation efforts. Continued monitoring is deemed critical to ensure the survival of this imperiled species in Senegal.
