Summary
A study conducted in rural areas near Copán Ruinas, Honduras, reveals alarming gaps in pesticide use among small-scale farmers, with only 3.7% reporting any training and widespread unsafe practices such as storing pesticides at home (39.5%), handling chemicals without gloves (30.9%), and disposing of residues in the environment (19.8%). These findings suggest a significant occupational and para-occupational risk, likely exacerbated by low education levels and socio-economic constraints that limit preventive measures. The study highlights a pattern consistent with regional and Latin American literature, where positive attitudes toward prevention coexist with high-risk behaviors, underscoring the need for targeted interventions to mitigate exposure risks in vulnerable agricultural communities.
