Summary

Researchers have identified Ilex danxiaensis, a distinct new tree species within the holly family (Aquifoliaceae), endemic to Danxia Mountain in Guangdong Province, China. This discovery was made during biodiversity investigations of the UNESCO-listed Danxia landform. The study employed molecular and morphological analyses, including sequences from nuclear markers (ITS, ETS, nepGS) and examination of floral traits, revealing that I. danxiaensis is closely related to species in the Ilex sect. Lioprinos clade but distinguishable by unique characteristics such as puberulent branchlets, 1–3-flowered male cymes, and distinct pyrene morphology. The findings contribute to understanding holly diversity in subtropical ecosystems.
