Summary
A more neutral and internationalized approach to protecting cultural identities could be advisable for the Old City of Jerusalem, given its significance to three monotheistic religions, uncertain political status, and global implications. Current protection efforts are fragmented, with communities managing their own heritage. This study evaluates whether a broader framework beyond the World Heritage Convention regime would be feasible and effective in safeguarding the site's diverse cultural identities.
