Summary

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments, renowned for their cultural and historical significance, faces significant biodeterioration due to microbial activity. A study identified 6 bacterial genera, 12 fungal species, 7 algal species, and 3 lichens on the temple surfaces, highlighting their role in the decay process. This deterioration is driven by a combination of physical and chemical reactions, exacerbated by environmental factors such as seasonal variations, rain, wind, and sunlight. The study, conducted at the western group of temples, underscores the urgent need for preservation efforts to mitigate biological degradation, which threatens these UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
