Summary

A nuanced understanding of the relationship between humans and nature, particularly in world-class natural sites like the Wadden Sea, can significantly enhance efforts to protect cultural and natural heritage. This study challenges the traditional dichotomy of 'wild' versus 'cultivated' nature by examining interpretations and appreciations of nature that is not untouched or untamed. Using data from 48 research participants in the Danish part of the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site, the research highlights subtle distinctions between nature and culture, offering refined conceptualizations that could strengthen global heritage protection efforts.
