Summary
Recent research challenges the traditional narrative of decline at the Sanctuary of Asklepios in Epidaurus following Rome's defeat of the Achaean League in 146 BC. Contrary to the widely held view that the sanctuary languished until Hadrian's intervention in the second century AD, this study demonstrates significant continuity in cult practices and activity during the first centuries BC and AD. By re-evaluating the evidence typically cited for decline, the research offers a more nuanced understanding of the Epidaurian Asklepieion's trajectory, highlighting persistent cultural and religious engagement despite political shifts.
