Summary

Contamination of the Rideau Canal by metals such as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), and copper (Cu) has reached levels of potential concern for both aquatic ecosystems and human health. Preliminary analysis suggests that primary sources of these contaminants include atmospheric deposition, natural geological processes, and anthropogenic factors linked to residential development. This study, conducted by Dr. Linda Campbell’s Lab at Queen’s University, combines a literature review with interviews from professionals and community members to identify the key contributors to metal influx in the system.
