Summary

Inca statecraft was underpinned by a sophisticated interplay of landscape manipulation, material resource management, and algorithmic logic embedded in the quipu—a knotted cord system. This study reveals that the Inca Empire's administrative prowess extended beyond military control to include strategic reshaping of the Andean environment through roads, terraces, and monumental architecture, facilitating resource extraction and ideological dissemination. Additionally, the materiality of goods like textiles, ceramics, and metals played dual roles as economic drivers and symbols of authority. Computational analysis of quipu structures further demonstrates their algorithmic logic, offering insights into Inca bureaucratic processes. By integrating archaeological evidence, ethnohistorical accounts, and computational methods, this research provides a holistic framework for understanding the complexities of Inca governance.
