Summary

Scientists have discovered katiarsite, a new mineral with the chemical formula KTiO(AsO4), in sublimates from the Arsenatnaya fumarole at Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka. This orthorhombic mineral, characterized by its sword-like crystal forms and optical properties, is associated with other arsenate minerals like hatertite and bradaczekite. Katiarsite exhibits a unique structure akin to synthetic KTA, a known non-linear optical material, suggesting potential applications in optics. The study employed electron-microprobe analysis, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy to elucidate its composition, crystal structure, and physical properties. The mineral's name reflects its chemical makeup, combining potassium (kalium), titanium, and arsenate.
