Summary

A recent taxonomic reassessment of the subantarctic red alga Grateloupia aucklandica, found on New Zealand's Auckland and Campbell Islands, reveals it should be reclassified under the genus Glaphyrosiphon. Phylogenetic analysis using rbcL data demonstrated that this species is more closely related to Glaphyrosiphon chilensis from Chile than to other New Zealand species in the same genus, such as Gl. intestinalis and Gl. lindaueri. This discovery underscores the need for a reevaluation of the taxonomic placement of Grateloupia aucklandica within its broader evolutionary context.
