Summary
A study reveals that local communities living near Riung National Park, including those on Benteng Tengah, Nangamese, and Latung islands, have a strong awareness of the Komodo dragon's habitat vegetation, which is crucial for its conservation. This perception is linked to the sustainability of the endangered species. The research, conducted through interviews and questionnaires, found that 93% of respondents from Benteng Tengah and Nangamese, as well as 100% from Latung, demonstrated good knowledge about Komodo dragon habitats. However, government policies prohibiting traditional land-clearing practices, such as burning savanna for cattle grazing, have increased conflicts between locals and Komodo dragons, leading to negative perceptions of the species as pests. This study highlights the importance of balancing conservation efforts with local livelihoods to ensure the long-term survival of the Komodo dragon.
