Summary
A groundbreaking discovery at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Monte San Giorgio reveals the first documented gastropods from the Meride Limestone, dating back to the Ladinian period. The study, focused on the newly identified Sceltrich beds in Valle di Sceltrich, Canton Ticino, Switzerland, uncovers three distinct taxa: Cryptonerita? sp., Coelostylina stotteri, and Omphaloptycha cf. marianii. These findings mark the first identifiable Ladinian gastropods from this renowned fossil site, providing significant insights into the biodiversity of the region during this geological epoch. The research highlights the occurrence of several taxa belonging to the clades Neritimorpha and Caenogastropoda, enriching our understanding of marine life in the Southern Alps during the Middle Triassic.
