Summary

Historic Cairo's urban heritage, particularly around significant structures like the Salah El-Din Citadel, faces increasing deterioration due to changing functional demands and neglect. This study identifies a critical gap in adaptive reuse strategies for historic seats of government, proposing an integrated urban approach to conserve these sites sustainably while accommodating new functions. Through a case study of Salah El-Din Square, researchers analyze three building types, assessing causes and consequences of their current state. The paper introduces prospective restoration scenarios that balance heritage preservation with modern land use, offering a model for sustainable conservation in UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
