Did the Crab Pulsar Undergo a Small Glitch in 2006 Late March/Early April?

World Heritage Site: Jodrell Bank Observatory

Summary

A previously undetected small glitch in the Crab Pulsar, occurring between late March and early April 2006, has been identified through analysis of monthly arrival times published by Jodrell Bank Observatory. This glitch, likely the smallest observed in the Crab Pulsar to date, was not reported by either Jodrell Bank or Xinjiang radio observatories, possibly due to its small magnitude or attribution to timing noise. The finding was verified using X-ray data from RXTE, addressing the challenge of distinguishing between minor glitches and pulsar timing noise. This research highlights the importance of careful data analysis in detecting subtle changes in pulsar behavior.
