Summary
A qualitative analysis reveals that the prolonged Thailand-Cambodia territorial dispute over Preah Vihear Temple, despite being settled by the International Court of Justice in 1962, was exacerbated by Thai populist exploitation of unresolved issues, leading to violent clashes in 2011. The study identifies this dynamic as a critical factor in the failure of international adjudication to achieve lasting peace. It proposes that balancing conflict resolution with public education—enhancing social environments and adopting bottom-up approaches—could prevent such escalations and foster genuine peace between the two nations.
