Summary

A high-resolution helicopter-borne electromagnetic survey has revealed the complex hydrogeological system of Montagne Pelée, a deadly andesitic volcano in Martinique that supplies 40% of the island's water. The study identified distinct aquifers, including an upper perched aquifer linked to phreatic eruptions and deeper flank aquifers with varying hydraulic conductivities. Structural asymmetry between the northeastern and southwestern flanks significantly influences groundwater flow. The research also found that older unconsolidated pyroclastic deposits have lower permeability, affecting recharge dynamics. This conceptual model advances understanding of volcanic hydrogeology in the Lesser Antilles and similar andesitic volcanoes.
