Summary

A shift from Art Nouveau to Modernism in interior design involves not the disappearance of ornament, but its internalization and reorganization within spatial elements. This study identifies three relationship types—additive, integrative, and internalized—and demonstrates that while explicit ornament weakens in Modernist designs like Villa Tugendhat, ornamentality persists through material surfaces, color planes, and linear details. These visual treatments influence perception of boundaries, transitions, sightlines, and movement, challenging the notion of ornament's absence in Modernism. The research combines theoretical review with comparative case analysis of four residential structures: Hôtel Tassel, Castel Béranger, Villa Tugendhat, and Villa Savoye.
