Summary

Dasht-e Lut, Iran's arid expanse, stands out globally for its unparalleled diversity of geomorphological phenomena, shaped by unique tectonic and climatic conditions. This study identifies the desert as a treasure trove of geological wonders, including the world's largest nebkhas (wind-sculpted mounds) and yardangs (streamlined ridges), along with extreme heat records and rare salt structures like polygons and marshes. Through satellite imagery analysis, fieldwork, and literature review, researchers highlight Lut Desert's potential as a geotourism hub, capable of driving economic growth while posing challenges that require strategic solutions—such as improved accessibility, guided tours, and infrastructure development. The study also proposes adventurous activities like sand skiing and star observation to boost its appeal, positioning Dasht-e Lut as a strong candidate for UNESCO Global Geopark status.
