Summary

The archaeological investigation of the southern portion of the Casas Grandes region, led by the Proyecto Arqueológico Chihuahua (PAC), reveals significant continuity between the Viejo and Medio periods, challenging the perception that Paquimé's influence was widespread. The study, spanning 28 sites, documents a strong agricultural focus during these periods, with maize cultivation peaking in the Viejo period. Ceramic analysis identifies new polychrome types and local pottery production, while survey work highlights cultural distinctions between the La Cruz and Viejo occupations. Unlike northern sites, southern zones lacked irrigation agriculture, leading to divergent social transformations. The research underscores the value of studying peripheral areas for understanding broader archaeological narratives.
