Summary
Gelidium corneum, a red macroalgae abundant along the Atlantic coast of Morocco, particularly around El Jadida, exhibits significant nutritional and antioxidant potential. This study reveals that G. corneum contains high levels of protein (26%), carbohydrates (55%), and lipids (6%), alongside notable amounts of alkaloids, flavonoids, coumarins, and tannins. The algal biomass demonstrates dose-dependent antioxidant activity, effectively scavenging DPPH free radicals. These findings underscore the species' dual value as a sustainable source for agar production and a promising candidate for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries due to its functional properties and bioactive compounds.
