Summary
Research on the Maya Site of Copán reveals that warfare played a critical role in the rise, development, and decline of the Classic Maya civilization. Exceptionally high concentrations of identifiable weapons, such as spearheads and arrowheads, were found in fortified areas like Aguateca (Guatemala) and the Acrópolis in Copán (Honduras), suggesting that elites—including rulers and scribes/artists—were actively involved in combat. Iconographic, epigraphic, and archaeological evidence supports this finding, indicating that warfare was a significant factor in the dynamics of power and societal structure within the Valley of Copán.
