Summary

Researchers have identified a new cryptic species, Pristimantis petersioides, within the Pristimantis lacrimosus group from Llanganates and Sangay National Parks. This discovery, supported by molecular and bioacoustic evidence, reveals significant genetic divergence (7.9% to 8.4%) from its closest relative, Pristimantis petersi, challenging previous taxonomic assumptions. The study also clarifies the phylogenetic positions of four additional species, expanding our understanding of this diverse frog genus. Given its small distribution range and threats from deforestation, Pristimantis petersioides is suggested for inclusion in the Endangered Red List category.
