Summary
A discourse analysis of English-language news coverage by Cambodia's Phnom Penh Post (July–October 2008) reveals that Thailand was portrayed negatively, while Cambodia received a more positive evaluation. The study, using Martin & White’s Appraisal framework—specifically the Attitude domain—examined linguistic features to uncover how narratives were constructed around the Preah Vihear Temple conflict. This international dispute, involving Cambodia and Thailand (and drawing ASEAN-wide attention), was found to shape public perception significantly through media framing. The analysis classified discourse patterns under three themes, highlighting how news language influences attitudes toward nations involved in heritage disputes.
