Summary
A 3D finite element (FE) coupled analysis model successfully simulated the geotechnical and structural behavior of Abu Serga Church, Cairo's oldest Coptic church, revealing critical damage mechanisms induced by differential settlement and flood susceptibility. The study employed advanced soil modeling (plastic Mohr-Coulomb) in PLAXIS 3D to analyze stress distribution and volumetric changes under self-weight loading from the historic masonry structure. Findings highlighted the interplay between saturated clay soils and structural integrity, providing actionable insights for conservation efforts. This pilot research informs retrofitting strategies for vulnerable UNESCO-listed heritage sites facing similar geotechnical challenges.
