Summary
A groundbreaking study demonstrates that very high-resolution (VHR) satellite imagery, such as that from the WorldView-3 satellite, can effectively detect and describe baleen whales in remote or inaccessible areas. This marks the first use of such advanced satellite technology for whale research, providing a non-invasive method to monitor large marine mammals where traditional survey techniques are impractical. The study identified four mysticete species—fin whales, humpback whales, southern right whales, and gray whales—by analyzing their visual and spectral characteristics. Fin and gray whales were particularly distinguishable due to their contrasting body coloration with the surrounding water and their prone body position near the sea surface. This research highlights the potential of VHR satellite imagery as a powerful tool for marine conservation efforts.
