Summary

Groundwater resources in the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site (VDWHS), South Africa, are critical for future development due to over-extended surface water supplies. A geohydrological assessment identified five groundwater management units and developed resource measures based on physical and anthropogenic factors. The study concludes that geohydrology must underpin all future land use management and spatial planning in the VDWHS to ensure sustainable and equitable water governance, integrating water, environmental, and land-use sectors effectively.
