Summary

Contradictions between safety standards and conservation guidelines can be harnessed as creative design opportunities. This study highlights the tension between British Standard 8213-1:2004, which provides risk-based recommendations for window designs to ensure safety during use and cleaning, and Edinburgh City Council's Conservation Area Guidelines, which prioritize preserving the historic character of New Towns. By analyzing these conflicting regulations, the research demonstrates how such discrepancies can inspire innovative architectural solutions that balance practical safety with aesthetic preservation in UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
